Filtered Water Is Not Just for Us!
Getting enough clean safe filtered water for your pets
Drinking enough filtered water every day is extremely important for your health. Drinking water can prevent dehydration, a condition that can cause unclear thinking, result in mood change, cause your body to overheat, and lead to constipation and kidney stones in you and your animals. Water has zero calories, so it also helps with managing weight and reducing calories substituted for drinks with calories, such as juice, sweet tea or soda.
Water helps your body:
- Keep a normal temperature.
- Lubricate and cushion joints.
- Protect your spinal cord and other sensitive tissues.
- Get rid of wastes through urination, perspiration, and bowel movements.
Getting enough clean safe water is the most important part of your nutrition, but the same goes for your furry friends. The type and safety of the water you drink is important, so why shouldn’t it be for your dog (or kitties)? When it comes to your pet’s health, water is even more important than protein, fat, carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals. Your dog will naturally lose water all day. Dogs lose water as they sweat through their paws and when they pant. They also lose water when they pee and poop. A dog that loses too much water, just 10% to 15% of the water in their body, can get very sick and even die.
Just like you
Dogs and cats can also become dehydrated for a number of other reasons such as heat stroke, diabetes, side effects of medication, vomiting, or diarrhea. And just like you, dehydration in them can also be the symptom of another underlying condition such as kidney disease, diabetes, or even some types of cancer. (If your pet is exhibiting any of these symptoms, be sure to check with your vet!) So replacing this water is extremely important. Make sure that your dog gets at least 1 ounce of water daily for each pound they weigh. For mine (a Great Dane) that means 120ounces!! If your dog is playing outdoors, especially when it’s hot, or if your dog stays outside on hot days, you can add ice to the water bowl as well. Mine loves it even when it is not so hot.
Ensure your dog stays properly hydrated!
Always have cool, fresh safe filtered water available for all of your family and pets. Relying on your city or well water unfiltered can be dangerous to your four-legged friend for the same reasons it can be dangerous to you. According to the Center for Disease Control, contaminants that lurk in unfiltered tap water can lead to neurological disorders, gastrointestinal illness, reproductive issues in humans and even cancers. These contaminants can include pesticides, bacteria, pharmaceuticals, viruses and more. Having filtered water for yourself and your family (including pets) is the best and easiest way to keep everyone safe.
